Sex and love addiction effects all genders and can be described as an incessant preoccupation with sexual activity or romantic pursuit. The sexual activity can vary and take many forms, to name a few: compulsive masturbation, sex workers, pornography, affairs, chemsex, swinging, group orgies and/or sexual offending.
Porn addiction is considered a subset of sex addiction but can have different root causes. The widespread use of technology means porn is available 24/7 and often free. Internet porn is a supernatural stimuli that rewards the brain with powerful opiates far beyond what normal sexual activity would produce. As a result, it can become highly addictive and is likened to the ‘crack cocaine’ of sex addiction. One of the most challenging aspects of porn addiction is that it has a habit (no pun intended) of creeping up on you and only becoming apparent when you can’t stop or struggle with porn induced erectile dysfuntion (PIED).
Sex, love and porn addiction can wreak havoc with your health, work-life, relationships and spirituality, causing much shame, confusion and despair, but there is hope.
Therapy involves a thorough history taking, exploring and processing possible roots, implementing ways of breaking the cycle and finding a different way of being. It takes work but is well worth the effort!
