Approach and Qualifications

My Approach

I believe that a fundamental aspect of counselling is the therapeutic relationship; hence I endeavour to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space for clients to reflect on areas of their lives, thoughts and feelings.

I believe that each person has intrinsic worth, value and something unique to offer and whilst these have often been distorted or not realised, they can be discovered. Life is a journey, so regardless of where you are at right now, there is always a possibility of your response and experience of it being different. Renewed hope and restoration looks different for everyone, consequently I offer both long and short term counselling and psychotherapy allowing us to go at your pace.

I use a counselling framework which integrates several counselling theories, such as Person-Centred therapy, CBT, Psychodynamic, Compassion Focused therapy and Somatic Trauma therapy as each client is unique and may need different things from therapy at different times. In practice, these are combined in a relational, psycho-educational way and is influenced by the focus of our work.

If, for example, you are seeking therapy to address past unresolved trauma that keeps tripping you up and effecting your daily life, we will begin with a thorough history taking then through the use of psycho-education and tailored strategies we will focus on improving your current quality of life. This will enable you to feel more present and connected to your body and mind as well as your enviroment and the people around you. Once a greater sense of safety and confidence has been achieved we will consider if addressing the past traumatic event or events is necessary or desirable or whether leaving the past in the past offers a better quality of life.

In a similar way, if addressing sex/porn addiction/compulsivity or cult, spiritual/religious abuse or the effects of high control groups is the focus of the therapy then after history taking and assessment of your current quality of life, a course of therapy will be consider and agreed upon depending of what is going to be the most helpful and restorative. However, frequently trauma either underpins or has been the result of the above presentations, in which case, focusing of trauma safety and stabilisation before proceeding offers the most favourable therapy outcome. Whilst therapy can be uncomfortable at times and does take courage and work it does not have to be gruelling and retraumatising.

I believe in a holistic approach to counselling, which means that I also focus on the relationship between mind, body and spirit; seeing you as a whole person. So if you would like to include faith or spirituality, in whatever way that is seen or experienced, into your therapy process then I welcome you to do so.
